I was on holiday in Scottsdale, AZ and did a google search for coffee roaster near me. One of the top hits was Peixoto Coffee Roasters in Chandler, AZ. I thought to myself that I never spent any significant time in Chandler, so I decided to take the 20-minute drive there to see what’s up.

To say the time and effort to drive to Peixoto Coffee Roaster was worth the trip would be an understatement.

The Peixoto Coffeeshop was quite easy to find right in the heart of downtown Chandler, and there’s plenty of free parking just up the street. As I walked into the shop, I saw a gentleman sitting out front with a cup of coffee, so I took this as a good sign for the shop.

Upon entering, I was immediately awestruck by the shop. The outstanding aroma of the coffee smells hit my brain first as I was processing all the sensory inputs at the same time. The place was packed with customers on a Monday mid-morning, which is always a great sign.

As I looked around, I took in the coffee shop vibe: the bags of coffee on
the shelf, the sounds of the coffee grinders and espresso machine, oldskool 80’s music pumping through the speakers….I said to myself: this is my kind of place.

The interior of the shop has since been remodeled, and is now not quite as Goth...much to Pegritz's disappointment.

As I walked up to the counter, I was greeted with a friendly smile and a welcome from the Barista. I introduced myself and said this was my first time at this shop, and the girl smiled and started describing the different coffees they offered and told me a bit of history of the family-owned coffee plantation in Brazil from which the beans are sourced. I was sold.

I ordered the Familia Blend pour-over and an extra shot of espresso on the side. As I waited for my order, I took a seat against the windows and sat and absorbed the awesomeness of the shop. The atmosphere was a true coffee shop vibe. The other customers were all smiling and enjoying their coffees and food. People were laughing and talking, some with laptops out working something. I thanked the Google gods for recommending this place and then my name was called: my order was ready.

I was extremely enjoying the coffee shop experience—but then I drank the coffee. Ooooooooh, boy!

I started with the espresso shot. Took in the smell of the coffee. There was a perfect layer of crema on top and I could not resist: I had to drink this. Wow. The flavor hit my tongue and I was overjoyed. The flavor was outstanding and delicious. The espresso has a beautiful mix of a bit of sweetness coupled with a touch of bitterness. It was amazing.

I eagerly finished up the shot and moved on to the Familia blend pour-over. Another amazing cup of coffee—the taste was perfect. As I only drink coffee black, my opinion of the stuff is unbiased by any additives. There is very little bitterness to the Familia blend, with a light and airy texture mouth feel. Just outstanding.

As I was leaving, I picked up a bag of the Familia blend to take back to Pennsylvania (click here for our review of the blend). I told the barista how much I enjoyed the coffee, especially the espresso shot. She informed me that their espresso roast is their Honey Blend.

I decided then that I would be back tomorrow for a pour over of the Honey blend and, of course, another espresso shot. Needless to say, the Honey blend was even more outstanding than the amazing Familia.

Ultimately, during my 5-day vacation in the Valley of the Sun, I spent 4 of those days at the Peixoto Coffee Roaster. The gentleman that I mentioned earlier sitting outside was there drinking a cup coffee every one of those days. I told him on the third day: “Now I know why you are here every day!”

He smiled and said, “The coffee is amazing.”

Due to extenuating circumstances—specifically a damn hurricane hitting Texas—I ended up changing my flight back to Pittsburgh from an early morning flight to an afternoon flight, which meant that I could stop one last time at Peixoto. On that last day, I ordered the Honey blend pour over with the extra shot espresso added to the coffee (a.k.a. “shot in the dark” or “redeye”). Though I greatly enjoyed all the coffees I’d had each day, the Honey espresso shot in the Honey blend pour-over was undoubtedly the best.

On a scale of 1 to 5, that pour-over/espresso shot combination gets a 10.

As I waited for my delayed fight back to Pittsburgh, I seriously contemplated the idea of moving to Chandler, AZ, just so I could drink Peixoto coffee every day and I even did a quick job and real estate search in the area.

In short, Peixoto Coffee is highly recommended. If you are anywhere near Phoenix, AZ, I would take the time to drive up to Chandler just for a cup of Peixoto Coffee. The shop is about 20 miles from Sky Harbor Airport, so it’s not that bad a drive. You will thank yourself later after drinking some of the best coffee that I have ever had in the United States.

Joe.
