On my vacation in Scottsdale, AZ, I came upon the Yellow Spruce Roasters Coffee Shop in Old Town Scottsdale. The shop is a combination of a wine bar, gelato store and coffee shop. It’s in a great location in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale with ample free parking directly in front of the store, and it was just a quick walk from the Hyatt Place Hotel that I was staying at on this vacation.
The shop is quite quaint and small. The overall atmosphere of the place is cool, filled with the aroma of good coffee. There was an antique coffee grinder on display which I found quite interesting.
The barista greeted me with a friendly smile and polite demeanor. I asked for shot of espresso and drip coffee. The only drip coffee for the day was a single-origin Sumatra blend. Now, I am not particularly a fan of Sumatra coffees, but I decided to order the drip anyway. The girl also talked me into a Tiramisu gelato.
The espresso shot was a standard, run of the mill espresso shot: decent flavor, not very bitter, not very sweet—a thoroughly middle of the road espresso shot. The Sumatra drip, however, was quite surprising. Like I said, I generally do not like Sumatran coffees, because all I taste is the volcanic ash that the beans were grown in. This cup of Sumatra, though, had a light and very flavorful taste. The ashen taste was nowhere near as prevalent as in other Sumatra coffees I’ve had. Without that messing with my taste buds, the fresh flavor of the roast was very much evident.
Overall, I would go back to Yellow Spruce Roasters whenever I am back in Old Town Scottsdale. Decent cup of coffee in a quaint and small shop with friendly staff. By the way, the gelato was not bad either.
By purchasing coffee from Yellow Spruce Roaster your supporting the owner Brian Fernandez which is a veteran of the Air Force and retired Police Officer. We should all thank Brian for service and support military veteran businesses. Thank you, Brian.
