After drinking Illy’s famous Classico Blend, I decided that I needed to try another roast by them. As I reviewed their product selection, I saw the Arabica Selection Costa Rican roast. Having a predilection for Costa Rican coffees, I decided to give it a try.
Upon opening the can, the first sensory input was the beautiful color of the beans. The beans have that slightly darker brown color that is common with medium roast coffee. Then I was hit with the sweet, beautiful aroma of beans. My nose first noticed the slight fruity smell coupled with the beautiful base smell of coffee. As I first started filling the carafe of the French Press with the hot water, that coffee aroma came through even stronger, and I knew at this point this cannot possibly be a bad-tasting coffee. The color was just right, and the aroma was amazing.
After going through the French Press process, I was ready to take my first taste of the coffee. My first response was “WOW! GodDAMN, Batman—that is a good cup of coffee.” Yes, it was that good of a cup of coffee. The taste of the sweet honey and fruity flavor was the first thing that I noticed. As I drank more, there was just a light touch of bitterness to the taste. The mouthfeel was very light and airy. Overall, it was amazing coffee. As I picked up the French Press, I sighed as I reluctantly shared the coffee with my coworkers. Down deep, I will admit that I did not want to share this blissful coffee. After finishing my cup, I immediately started grinding beans for another carafe of goodness.
Since I’ve enjoyed other Illy coffees and I’m a fan of Costa Rican beans in general, my expectations of this coffee were high. It did NOT disappoint. Illy Arabica Selection Costa Rican Coffee is that it is one of the best coffees ever. This coffee is up there with Cafeaua Vampirului, which is the best coffee that I have drank. If you are looking for an excellent cup of coffee, Illy Costa Rican is a MUST BUY.
Oh yeah, my coworkers enjoyed the coffee as well.

PEGRITZ adds: Yinz, he ain’t kidding—this coffee is all that and more. I like the Classico just a tiiiiiiiiiiny bit more, but if I ever have to choose between any two Illy blends, I’m just going to flip a coin, because I have yet to taste an Illy coffee that isn’t amazing.
