After purchasing my first Keurig coffee maker, I decided to buy some coffee other than the standard Keurig Green Mountain coffee. That stuff is okay, but not great. There is better available. While web searching, I came across the San Francisco Coffee Company’s Fog Chaser blend. Their description of the coffee piqued my interest, and I noticed that they make compostable coffee pods, which was surprising considering all other K-Cups that I knew of at time are just littering the world with more plastic. Even though the Fog Chaser is a darker roast than I usually like, I decided to give it a try.

I popped the k-cup into the machine and pressed the brew button. As I stood waiting for the coffee to fill up my coffee mug, I noted the strong, but not overpowering, aroma of coffee: a nice, pleasant smell. As I’ve said before, I am not a fan of dark roast coffees, and this coffee is definitely on the darker side of the medium/dark roast spectrum. But the coffee was surprisingly good! The taste was well-balanced, not too bitter nor too sweet. Most coffees closer to the dark end of the roasting scale have a thicker or more viscous mouthfeel, but Fog Chaser has a simple, if slightly heavy, mouthfeel which correlates with it being a medium/dark roast. Not too light, not too dark. Overall, it was a decent cup of coffee for a Keurig brew. I would recommend it for all you K-Cup enthusiasts.

Remembering how much I like the Keurig version of Fog Chaser, I later ordered a bag of whole bean and brewed it in the French press (my preferred brewing method). As expected, the French Press brings out the flavor more than the Keurig. The taste is more dynamic and flavorful even considering the bits of fines that passed through the French Press filter. A good Keurig coffee is even better in the French Press.

Overall, my review of San Francisco Bay Roasters Fog Chaser is that it is a definite must try. Give it a shot as either a Keurig K-Cup or in a French press, as Fog Chaser is great using any brew method. You will not be disappointed!

PEGRITZ adds: It’s good stuff. I like dark roasts, and Fog Chaser is one of the best I’ve had so far. Depending on how strong you make it—Joe and I were fooling around with an AeroPress coffee maker this weekend (review forthcoming!), and sometimes the result was really thin and other times nearly as thick as a Turkish coffee—it can come on a little bitter at first…but that very well may just be the result of our screwing up the brewing process in the plungee-thingee. I found it mellows out as it cools, so if you’re a medium-temp fan like me, you’ll probably want to let it cool off a bit before you get into it. Still, it’s definitely one of the best coffees I’ve drunk.

Oh, and it’s only around $20 for a two-pound bag! Neither Joe nor I adhere to that “Only expensive coffee is good” bullcrap—if a coffee is good, it doesn’t matter if it’s $5 a pound and comes packaged in an old McDonald’s bag. Two pounds for $20ish of a damn fine coffee is a damn fine deal. Get ye some!
